Dear Community Members:

Due to the inclement weather we encountered this year our school calendar has been extended to allow for several make-up days.  Currently June 6, 9 and 10 have been scheduled as regular school days.  In addition we will have to add some minutes to the last few days of the year to meet the required number of hours we need.

Recently the State legislature passed a law eliminating the requirement that school districts schedule 180 days in a school year.  The legislature did not change the required number of hours a district needs to schedule for instruction.

The Kewaunee School District calendar is set for the 2014-15 school year.  However, with the 180 day requirement eliminated there will be discussion about how to schedule for 2015-16 considering that districts now have more flexibility in regard to meeting the hours of instruction required.

During the recent legislative session there was also considerable debate about whether the Common Core State Standards that were adopted for English Language Arts and Mathematics in 2010 should be maintained.

In the end, the legislature did not vote to change the Common Core Standards so we will proceed as we have in regard to the implementation.

The roll out of summer school opportunities for students is in progress.  Changes have been made in regard to course offerings and  the dates for summer school.  Summer school will now run from June 16-July 3, with two sessions:  8:00-9:30 and 9:30-11:00 a.m., Monday-Friday.  There will also be an  August 18-22 session, 8:00-11:00 a.m., Monday-Friday.

I strongly encourage parents to enroll your  children in our summer school program. It is participation in programs like this that help children retain and advance the knowledge they have obtained through the regular school year.  It will also be very beneficial to them as they begin the new school year in September.

Thank you for your continued assistance and support.

Sincerely,

Joseph Innis
District Administrator
