On October 21, 2024, the Kewaunee Title 1 Program welcomed over 25 families to our Fall Family Literacy night. The theme was CAMP READ A LOT! Students and families participated in several outdoor themed literacy activities, ate a delicious hot dog meal, and even made a s’more to eat as dessert. Families participated in 5 different literacy stations which were set up around the grade school cafeteria. Upon entering the cafeteria, families checked in and received a punch card to keep track of all of the activities they completed. At the end of the night, if all activities were completed or attempted, each student received 2 new books to take home.
Families could preview the Benchmark Advanced Reading curriculum adopted
by the Kewaunee School District in the 2023-24 school year as well as learn about the Science of Reading approach through various family activities. Parents also received an infographic on the purpose and services the Kewaunee Title 1 program offers to all students within the Kewaunee Community.
Families participated in a word making activity, wrote a nature theme poem, fished for rhyming word pairs, made a blending board to create words, and read books with family members in tents and camping chairs! 4th Grade teacher and parent Melinda Brown said, “I really liked the blending board my son completed. Right now, he was able to identify letters and some blends. As he gets older, he will be able to identify more sounds and make words. It was a great activity!”
