The students in Miss Dani’s classroom have been enjoying incorporating Project Based Learning into their curriculum this year. Most recently, students transformed their classroom into Disney World!
They began this process transitioning from learning about Opinion writing. Students each chose a character found at Disney World and wrote why their character is the best. Next, students worked on their typing skills by typing adjectives to describe their character. Students then thought of ways they are similar to their character and ways they are different.
After that, students focused on the Disney Park their character can be found in and researched the rides. Students enjoyed viewing virtual rollercoaster videos for each ride. Next up: food! Students were excited to see photos of the delicious foods the parks have to offer. Each student chose their top food. Following the project, students went to the grocery store to follow a list of ingredients to make imitation recipes of the top foods in their weekly cooking class.
The last portion was inspired by the book “Battle Bunny,” which is a story reimagined by changing the original illustrations and words with a sharpie to create an entirely new story. Students edited and reimagined their own books to create their very own original story.
Throughout the process many creative elements were incorporated for students to bring their characters to life. Students worked on fine motor skills by tracing their characters, painting and cutting them and following instructions from online “how to draw” videos.
The grand finale was inviting peers, teachers and families to experience the magic of Disney world in the classroom. Students presented their work sporting their Mickey Mouse ears - it was a fun and unique way to develop their presentation and social skills.
