Referendum April 1

Thank You Kewaunee!

On April 1, 2025, voters in the Kewaunee School District voted to support a $24.5 million facilities improvement referendum, which will address the District’s most pressing facility needs, including repairing aging infrastructure, enhancing educational spaces, and maximizing existing space at the district.

This $24.5 million investment will allow the district to:

  • Make essential capital maintenance improvements to extend the life of district buildings.

  • Renovate classrooms to accommodate growing 3K, 4K, and Kindergarten programs while repurposing underutilized high school space for 8th grade students.

  • Upgrade Visual and Performing Arts classrooms to support student creativity.

  • Construct a new student and event entrance to improve accessibility and safety.

  • Expand and renovate locker rooms and support spaces.

  • Expand and renovate kitchen and cafeteria to meet student needs.

  • Enhance agricultural education facilities with additional space for transportation support and outdoor bus parking.

  • Acquire new furnishings, fixtures, and equipment to support learning.

We are very grateful to our community for their support of these referendum projects, and look forward to providing current and future Kewaunee students with modern, flexible educational spaces our students and community and be proud of for generations.

Kewaunee School District

Design Process is Underway!

As soon as the community gave us approval to move forward, the architectural design process began. This process, being led by EUA, and supported by Miron (construction manager) has been divided into two project sub-groups: Transportation Support Space and Grade School/High School Additions and Renovations. Separating out the transportation support space enables our team to accelerate the timeline for that project, getting the district into the space months before the rest of the projects will be completed.

The design phase will last through July 2025 for the transportation support space, and through February 2026 for the grade school and high school additions and renovations.  Phased construction on the transportation support space would begin in October 2025, while construction on the grade school & high school additions and renovations would begin in May 2026.

 Next Steps – Construction Bidding

All components of the project are competitively bid to ensure transparency and the best value for the district. Our partners work closely with the district to identify and engage local subcontractors and suppliers whenever possible, maximizing opportunities for community involvement and supporting the local economy throughout the construction process. Look for bidding to start in August 2025 for the Transportation Support Space, and February 2026 for the remainder of the approved projects.

We Are Continuing With The Next Phase Of Our Long-Range Facilities Plan

Over the past year, the Kewaunee Board of Education and administration has been assessing and evaluating options to address facility needs that are too large to be covered by the District’s annual operating budget. Our goal with this next phase of our long-range facilities plan is to pick up where we left off 10 years ago, addressing our remaining building system and site needs, and continue providing modern, flexible educational spaces our students and community can be proud of for generations.

The Kewaunee School District Board of Education unanimously approved presenting school district residents with the next phase of the long-range facilities improvement plan to resolve the District’s most pressing and prioritized facility needs, enhance educational spaces, and maximize the use of our existing buildings. The April 1st referendum will ask residents permission to borrow up to $24.5 million for a school building and facility improvement project.
